Heirloom Seeds
Four O’Clocks Mix
Latin Name:
Mirabilis jalapaFour O’Clocks, sometimes called ‘Marvel of Peru’, are low-growing, bushy plants with flowers that blooms open every afternoon (around 4 o’clock) and have closed by the next morning. They used to be a great favourite in Victorian times but seldom known now. Flowers in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, pink, magenta and red.
Marvel of Peru is obviously not a local species. Its scientific name translated into wonderful or admirable plant from Jalapa, which is a region in both Mexico and Guatemala. It is known for its beautiful flowers and was brought to Europe and North America as an ornamental. They are easy to grow from seeds and you can dig them up and put them in other locations without worry of harming them. Numerous large, dark, leathery, 5-ribbed, spherical “seeds” (actually a fruit that is a nut-like achene) with a wrinkled surface are produced in the fall. These are poisonous if ingested.
