Purple Calabash Tomato
Latin Name:
Solanum lycopersicum Purple CalabashPurple Calabash tomatoes are medium-sized, typically weighing 3-6 ounces, with a deeply ribbed, almost pleated shape that gives them a somewhat flattened, pumpkin-like look. Their skin is a deep, dusky purple to burgundy, often with green or dark streaks near the shoulders when not fully ripened. The flesh inside is a reddish-purple hue, juicy, with a complex network of seed cavities.
Purple Calabash tomatoes are prized for their intense, tangy, and slightly smoky flavor, balancing sweetness and acidity. They’re often described as having a “wine-like” or “earthy” taste, making them a favorite for fresh eating, salads, salsas, or sauces where their bold flavor can shine.
Believed to have Mesoamerican origins, possibly dating back to Mayan cultivation, Purple Calabash is one of the oldest tomato varieties still grown today.
