Larkspur

Latin Name:

Delphinium ajacis

Quite popular through the years for those seeking a “cottage garden” look in their yards. Larkspur comes with deep purple or purplish blue flowers with some being pink and white. The leaves are deeply lobed, with the main flowering system growing erect and up to 4 feet tall. Larkspur is an annual that can self-seed in the garden. Delphinium leaves, flowers, and seed are considered to be toxic to humans and animals, most notably cattle so plant them away from children and animals. Exercise caution when handling and growing.

The plant, an annual, was introduced into Britain in the mid-1500's from its native habitat the Mediterranean. The name, Larkspur, probably originated in England and refers to the horn-shaped nectary of the flower which resembles the spur of a lark's claw.
